Bloody Sunday is a historic event that made Selma, Alabama better known. A group of white segregationists attacked peaceful marchers protesting for the Civil Rights Movement and a young African American man, by the name of Jimmie Lee Jackson, was shot and killed by a state trooper. As a result, Martin Luther King led nonviolent residents from Selma, Alabama to accomplish a 5 day, 54 mile march to campaign voting rights for African Americans. The historic march began on Sunday, March 7, 1965, and soon became known as "Bloody Sunday."
"I'm afraid our activities would be received with considerable disapprobation..." (Lee 42)
